Sustainably farmed, award winning shellfish from the sparkling water of the River Exe, Devon

Think Deep Project

Think Deep Premiere The Think Deep project was sponsored by East Devon District Council with the brief to produce a film to educate us about sustainable sea resources in the local area.

Working with the East Devon Ranger, James Chubb, Exmouth Community College supported the project with input from Head of Geography, Mr Eynon, and three students who, after auditioning, were the main presenters of the film. Michelin star chef Michael Caines addresses the audience at the premiere.

The film was shot, directed and edited by local Television Company, Pangaea, based in Exeter. The shooting took place in Beer, Sidmouth, Exmouth and Darts Farm with Michelin starred and TV Chef, Michael Caines, taking a lead role.

Local people who work in the fishing industry explained how we can manage our fish resources so that they are sustainable: Myles Blood-Smythe at Exmouth Mussels, Kim Aplin of Beer (Crab fishermen), and David Kerley of Darts Farm Fish Shed. The completed film was premiered at Exmouth Community College on Wednesday 14th October to a large audience of local people and VIPs. Included in those present were Michael Caines, The Chair of East Devon Council, The Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Exmouth; Exmouth Town Clerk and the proud parents of the student presenters who were all praised for the professional work they did.

After the premiere the audience were very complimentary about the film, its message and particularly about the student presenters: Jevon, Alice and Philippa. Over 90 people were welcomed by the Principal, Mr Alexander after they had enjoyed “top notch” hospitality provided by the college caterers, Innovate.

The Chair of East Devon Council, Graham Liverton explained the thinking behind the production: "East Devon has a fishing heritage to be proud of. This film will bring this heritage into classrooms throughout the region. We all realise the need to provide food, including seafood, sustainably and it is fantastic to be able to showcase local examples of how this is currently being achieved to students throughout the South West."
